The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III and the Washington Redskins right where they wanted them on Sunday.
Down by one point. Less than two minutes to go. Only one timeout. On the road.
But none of that stopped the Heisman trophy winner and Tampa Bay could only watch as RG3 drove down the field and put the Redskins into scoring position to win the game with a late Billy Cundiff field goal.
Griffin got his first career fourth quarter comeback in dramatic fashion and he did it without communication from his coaching staff.
The whole drive was a bit complicated," said Griffin after the game. "In practice every week we always practice me calling the plays in two-minute acting as if the headset goes out. The funny thing was that the headset did go out on that drive and that’s why I was having to run back and forth to the sideline. I had to call a couple of my own plays and we moved the plays and got in field go range. It was very neat how that practice scenario played out in the game.
Griffin may think it was just an accident, but his teammate, wide receiver Santana Moss, doesn't think so.
"Happens every time," Moss said. "No lie. I've been in the league 12 years, I've been in plenty of games, and the home team goes, 'Oh well.' " Moss then apparently pulled an imaginary plug out of the wall.
If the Bucs did intentionally sabotage Griffin's headset, it certainly didn't go as planned. In fact, it may have worked against them.
Not knowing the plays allowed Griffin to go out there and do what he does best – make plays. Griffin improvised and did what he had to do in order to move the football. That 15-yard scramble near the end of the drive is a perfect example of Griffin taking the game into his own hands (or feet).
The Bucs had a prime opportunity late to make a defensive stand and win the game. Instead they played soft and allowed Griffin to march right down the field.
Maybe next game the Bucs can use the good ol' Buffalo Wild Wings trick and trip the ball carrier with the sprinkler system late in the game to preserve a victory.
