Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end Kellen Winslow has always been outspoken during his football career. He started in college while at the University of Miami and he continued once he followed his father's footsteps into the NFL.
Once he arrived in Tampa Bay, however, Winslow decided to keep his mouth shut and let his play do the talking. During his three seasons with the Bucs, Winslow racked up 218 catches for 2,595 yards and 12 touchdowns.
But this offseason the Bucs underwent enormous change and Greg Schiano was hired to replace Raheem Morris. The organization began to weed out the players that didn't fit the new "Buccaneer Way" and Winslow soon found himself in a row with Schiano.
Tampa Bay went in a different direction and traded Winslow to the Seahawks last month. Now that he is in Seattle, Winslow decided now was to time to open his mouth and he took a few shots at Schiano.
"Real [bleep] Schiano came over there, [bleep] ‘TOES ON THE LINE! TOES ON THE LINE!’ Blowing the whistle. You can’t laugh. You can’t joke around. So I decided not to go to OTAs [organized team activities]," said Winslow. "You know they got my man Ra [Raheem Morris] up out of there and I was loyal to him. Would've taken a bullet for that dude. So I had to roll man."
Winslow said his comments to Michael Robinson on "Real Rob's Report." The former first-round pick then went on and talked about his admiration for Morris when he was asked why he liked his former coach so much.
"The cool thing about Rah is, Rah could be here talking to us right now," Winslow said. "He wasn’t a company coach. He was a player’s coach. I mean, just everything about him man. He was real. You could talk to him face-to-face, real man-to-man. They fired the wrong dude up there."
Winslow may think that, but the Glazers certainly don't think so. The Bucs ended 2011 on a 10-game losing streak and played some of the worst football that this franchise ever produced. Players in the locker room weren't responding to Morris' tactics anymore so he had to go.
Schiano's philosophy may not have sat well with Winslow, but it is exactly what Tampa Bay needs right now.
That is why he was hired in the first place.
