New Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano has had a mighty difficult time assembling his coaching staff since taking the job nearly two weeks ago. He has been turned down left and right by potential candidates and other teams who are holding their men to their current contracts.
However, it looks as though Schiano has caught a big break by hiring his former boss to oversee the Bucs’ defense. FoxSports.com Alex Marvez has reported that Schiano and the Bucs have hired long-time collegiate and NFL coach Butch Davis as the team’s senior assistant on defense.
The Bucs have not confirmed Davis’ hiring, but reports indicate that the two sides are extremely close to a deal. Despite the title of senior assistant on defense (whatever that means), Davis will reportedly not be team’s defensive coordinator, according to the Tampa Bay Times’ Stephen Holder.
Davis hired Schiano to be his defensive coordinator in 1999, a position he held for two seasons. In 2001, both men left Miami to become head coaches elsewhere. Davis became the head coach of the Cleveland Browns, while Schiano got the head coaching gig at Rutgers.
Davis spent four seasons as the Browns head coach before being fired after the 2004 season. During his time in Cleveland, Davis had a 24-34 record.
He then returned back to the college ranks in 2007 after being hired by the University of North Carolina. Davis turned the program around and went 28-23 during his four seasons with the Tar Heels. However, Davis was fired in 2010 after the NCAA found several of his players in violation of accepting illegal payments.
Hopefully the combination of Schiano, Davis, and whoever they hire as their defensive coordinator can get the Bucs back to their defensive roots after Tampa Bay fielded the worst defense in franchise history last season.
